Simon releases ‘ready now’
The return of one of London’s smoothest reggae voices, Simon, better known as Don Ricardo.
His new single, ‘Ready Now’, will be released on Friday 5th June 2020, on all digital stores.
The singer, who was born in London and raised in Jamaica, will be using the opportunity of releasing new music on London record label, P-Magic, home to tracks from Luciano and Dawn Penn, to relaunch his career under his Christian name, Simon.
A consistent presence on the UK underground reggae scene for over thirty years, ‘Don Ricardo’, put over twenty singles to vinyl between 1989 and the release of his debut album, ‘Introducing…’, in 2004. A cult favourite, the record gained positive reviews and traction on the scene, but sadly, never caught the mainstream attention in the way it should.
Under the supervision of producers Ricky Smith and Louis Beckett, ‘Simon’ has produced a song that embodies both his triumphant return and the struggles he underwent through in order to get there. The video directed by Jordan Copeland and Byron Johnson, tells the story of Don’s battles with corporate labels and the changing face of the musical landscape in recent years, before finally linking up with P-Magic. Featuring a cast of forty faces, the video is also pays homage to the characters who make up the Mellow Mix Studio, a Caribbean community centre that Ricky Smith helped to physically build; and now houses his studio and live rehearsals rooms.
Home away from home for many Caribbean artists, the Mellow Mix has a rich history in playing host artists that are in London to tour and record, including the likes of The Mighty Diamonds, Big Youth and long-time friend, Luciano.
“I trust and respect P-Magic on every level; musically, professionally, personally. We are family and I’m proud that this track and video represents that. I hope that reggae fans all over the world can connect with what I’m saying and find inspiration in the track to never give up” says Simon.
