Backed by BBC Radio tastemaker David Rodigan , UK-based reggae group Ben Russell And The Charmers are releasing their new single, ‘ Ocean ’ on 4th of May, off their eponymous upcoming album.
After touring some of the biggest festivals in the UK ( Glastonbury , Boomtown Fair , Secret Garden Party , One Love , Edinburgh Fringe ), sharing stages with internationally acclaimed artists such as, ‘ Katchafire’, ‘ Black Uhuru’s Mykal Rose ’, ‘ The Dualers ’ and joining ‘ Groundatio n’ later this year at O2 Academy Islington, the band have established themselves as a stirring presence in the UK alternative music scene.
Ocean is an instant dub-pop classic. A heady mix of pop sensibilities with rolling dub reggae grooves, heart-on-your-sleeve songwriting and shimmering production awash with delay, it is the perfect introduction to the band’s new direction and original take on the reggae genre. It is a true ode to the natural and mystical, which comes from songwriter Ben Russell’s roots in the surf culture of his native Australia.
“The song is about enjoying the elements, colour and natural beauty in all shapes and forms that doesn’t cost anything. However you must treat it with respect as it can pull you under and send you crashing ” – Ben Russell
A consummate live band, Ben Russell And The Charmers are known for their feel-good vibes and energetic shows, regularly touring across the UK, France and beyond. With live appearances on BBC Radio, Kent with Dominic King and Jon Holmes shined their warm personalities and excitement of their upcoming release.
Having also gained the applause and attention of famed radio influencer David Rodigan , describing them as “ serious British reggae ”, Rodigan awarded Ben Russell And The Charmers an exclusive spot on ‘ One Drop Record ’, a feature where Rodigan handpicked their previous single ‘The Golden Sun’ to move on to other Radio 1Xtra shows, bringing their music to a wider audience and potentially positioning Ben Russell And The Charmers as a new upcoming reggae favourite in the UK music scene.
